Essay The
Raven with citizenship and commitment
So first
of all what is citizenship and commitment? Citizenship is the status of a
person recognized under the custom or law as being a legal member of a
sovereign state or belonging to a nation. A person may have multiple
citizenships. A person who does not have citizenship of any state is said to be
stateless, while one who lives on state borders whose territorial status is
uncertain is a border-lander. So, what is commitment? Usually evokes a strong
sense of intention and focus. A statement of purpose or a plan of action
typically accompanies it. Very often, we utilize this word about proclamations
we may make about the seriousness of our relationships. For example, “I’m in a
committed relationship,” or “I’m completely committed to this relationship.” In
such circumstances, what exactly are we saying? We take it for granted that the
word or the expression means the same thing to all of us. I can assure you that
it does not. The Raven, what is this story about? The Raven is a poem write by
Edgar Allan Poe in 1845, this poem is about a men who lose a women named Lenore
apparently this men love her in a deeply way and apparently this women die. So
this men was in an extremely depression and a sad mood, and he was becoming
crazy because he miss her. So the poem begin when this men was in his room lay
in the bed doing nothing, so he suddenly on his door so he wonder who can be.
He though that may be visitors so he went to open the door and when he open it
he get with the surprise that no one was in there so he get confused. He decide
to go to the study room on his cabin and begin to read a book. Some hours later
when he was reading he hear a tapping again but this time this tapping was
coming from a window of his cabin so he decided to go and check what was going on.
He went to the window and he open it because of his curiosity and when he open
it he saw a Raven and this Raven enter the house and sit on the bust of a
statue of the goddess Athena who is the goddess of wisdom. This men begin to
have a big curiosity of wondering what was doing this raven hear so he ask to
the raven ¿Are you Leonor? However, the only answer that the narrator receive
from the bird was “nevermore”. The narrator keep asking question so he ask if
he was good or bad and the bird again answer “nevermore”. Then he ask if the
bird was a daemon or an angel and again he answer “nevermore”. So the narrator
keep doing question until he was becoming more crazy than he already was and
was scare so he decided to lay on the floor of the room while the bird keep
watching him and there is where the poem end. So how are commitment and
citizenships related with this story? First we can see that the commitment is
extremely related because apparently the narrator have an extreme commitment to
Leonor and that’s why he was suffering too much because he loose her and he
have a hole in his hearth. Citizenship is not related in a direct way but is
like the theme of the poem because it shows us how a person can be suffering
and how we need to help them for stop their suffering. But I think that the
most important value of this story is “love” because we can appreciate how the
narrator really love Lenore and how he was suffering because she wasn’t with
him anymore. Therefore, we can learn from a story that we do not have to get
obsessed with people because at the end they always would leave us.
In conclusion, I think there's a lot more of other values
present in the story rather than citizenship and commitment, at least commitment is present in the poem with
Lenore's relationship with the man but for citizenship i can say is not present
not even a little bit of it. Edgar allan poe's way of writing of being dark and
mysterious, he uses a lot of symbolism in his works and I think that The Raven
is a more personal work if his, cause is related to the death of his wife in
real life, maybe that's why people really feel connected to it, cause you feel
the sentiment with which it was wrote.
